Here's a quick look into the three former Fannie Mae executives who
brought down Wall Street.

Franklin Raines was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie
Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae
when auditing discovered severe irregularities in Fannie Mae's
accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street
Journal noted, " Raines, who long defended the company's accounting
despite mounting evidence that it wasn't proper, issued a statement
late Tuesday conceding that "mistakes were made" and saying he would
assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports
indicate the company was under growing pressure from regulators to
shake up its management in the wake of findings that the company's
books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four
years." Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion.

Raines left with a "golden parachute valued at $240 Million in
benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of
the accounting scandal became clear.

noted, "The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly
manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly
neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over
twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the
public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading
and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports
that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner."
These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return
$50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated
Fannie Mae profits.

Net windfall . . . $190 million!

Tim Howard - Was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard
"was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that
would ensure a "stable pattern of earnings" at Fannie. In everyday
English - he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation
determined that, "Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to
provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions
within Fannie Mae,"

On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice
Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae
executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied
manipulating the mortgage-finance giant's income statement to achieve
management pay bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the
company's board of directors since concluded that management did
manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard
resigned under pressure in late 2004.

Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

Jim Johnson - A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later
forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of
Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's May 2006 report on
mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you'll see some
interesting things about Johnson. Investigators found that Fannie Mae
had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson's 1998 compensation from
the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million
when it fact it was $21 million." Johnson is currently under
investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving
as CEO of Fannie Mae.

Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

Fourth of July. We would like to remind everyone
we are still under an Emergency Fireworks and
Burn Ban. Division of Forestry has worked over
3600 wildfires in the state since January 73 have
been in St Johns County since June.

Under the burn ban you can not:

¨ Use or discharge fireworks, sparklers,
trick noise makers or any other items listed in FS791.01 (4) (c).
¨ Use explosives or any other combustible compounds or Flares.
¨ Use any other outdoor burning devices or Campfires.
¨ Any other outdoor burning (lawn, debris, trash etc).

Exempt from the Burn Ban are campfires in a metal
fire ring located in a state park or licensed
campground and the use of barbeque grill, hibachi
or other similar devices specifically intended for cooking.

Like all major holidays the
Sheriff's Office always has a vast increase in
calls and will have extra patrols on the
road. We are asking for assistance with
voluntary compliance but wish to remind everyone
this is a criminal offense that could result in an arrest.

In an effort to both be convenient for our citizens and to help reduce costs to the Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar announced the implementation of “Online Reporting” for select incidents. “The challenge of this endeavor,” Shoar said, “is to maximize efficiencies and effectiveness, and at the same time, not sacrifice public safety or the quality of life our community deserves.”

Sheriff Shoar directed his management team to discover options that will allow for more discretionary patrol time and to give additional flexibility in how deputies are deployed. One of those options was Online Reporting, which allows citizens to file and receive a copy of a report without leaving their home. The types of reports that can be generated online are limited to low level crimes where no evidence or suspect information exists, thus saving thousands of tax dollars each year.

At the present time you will be able to file online reports for lost property, vandalism, thefts of not more than $300, identity theft, vehicle burglaries and harassing phone calls. With over 3,100 reports of these types of calls over the past year we could anticipate a significant savings if some of these cases were reported online, according to Shoar. It is important to note that all online reports will be reviewed and approved by a law enforcement supervisor.

Sheriff Shoar stressed that online reporting is simply an option our citizens may utilize to assist them in documenting a crime and is NOT mandatory. He added, “As always our deputies will continue to respond and meet with any citizen for any reason when they are requested.”

A burn ban has been enacted in St. Johns County, effective December 29, 2010. The burn ban pertains to residential outdoor burning such as leaves, yard debris, fireworks of any kind (including sparklers), campfires, flares or other outdoor burning devices.

An Emergency Order was signed by the County Commissioners on December 29th it is a Burn Ban for the next 7 days.

The ban prohibits the use of:

fireworks including sparklers

camp fires or outdoor cooking fires except those campfires located within a metal fire ring located within a state park or licensed campground or cooking fires located with in a barbecue grill, hibachi or other similar device specifically intended for cooking
any other open outdoor burning such as lawn, debris or trash burning

Deputies will be using discretion when dealing with these matters but any one found guilty of violating this order could be charged with a 2nd degree misdemeanor.

car break ins

This is not the first, second or third time I have seen an email from a disgruntled resident. Over and over again I hear about. Talk to any parent though and they will tell you that their child is an angel, but the kids surely belong to someone. If anything happens to your property (no matter how small) residents also need to call the sheriff's department and let them know what has happened. They usually have a pretty good handle on the kids in the area and the vandelism thats done to vehicles also. They can't "fix it" if they don't know about it. In the meantime maybe people here might watch out for their neighbor's ASSetts. Who knows--maybe one day--just one day those same kids might have something of their's stolen. What goes around-comes around.

P.S. For what it's worth--St. Augustine Shores, St. Augustine South, Sea Grove, Ocean Grove, etc. all have the same problems. Vandelism, cars broken into, etc. knows no boundaries.

I live on Treasure Beach Rd. we moved here from Arlington in Jacksonville to be in a safe community 2 yrs ago, when we lived in Jaxs. not once did our cars or home get broken into. in the 2 yrs we've lived here it has happened 3 times, twice our cars and once our sheds.

I want the parents of the kids breaking into the cars to beware, today I talked to the police and they informed me I could protect my property as I see fit. Today I went and bought 4 shot guns, bullets and birdshot, I figure I'll use the birdshot because its scatters and you don't have to have to have perfect aim, the Mommy's will be digging it out of thier kids for awhile. I don't want to have to live this way, but parents need to step up and be parents, not buddies. please forward this, and if your neighbor doesn't have e-mail, please let them know about me on Treasure Beach rd. I'm the one who is feed-up with their kids.

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy

efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was

complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.

Hellloooo,..............Just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid.

So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year,

that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!

Helllooooo?????It's been a year! I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line,

so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

Over this past weekend a rush of reports began to come into the Sheriff's Office of fraudulent transactions for debit / credit cards. From information gathered by the financial institutions the point of compromise was at the gasoline stations on SR 16 @ I-95. If you gassed up and used your debit / credit card at the pump recently at any of the gas stations in that area please review your statements as soon as possible. Report any fraudulent transactions to your financial institutions. Bank of St. Augustine and Prosperity Bank are working directly with us so you will not need a separate report from the Sheriff's Office. Other financial institutions may ask for you to complete a police report.

Through the PACT Prevention Coalition SARG Grant to combat underage drinking members of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office conducted a "Party Patrol Detail" this past Saturday, 03 April along with an "Alcohol Compliance Detail" this past Monday, 5 April. Both operations were in the St. Augustine Beach area during Spring Break.

The "Party Patrol Detail" arrested three individuals for an open house party and issued ten misdemeanor citations for possession of alcohol under 21.

For the "Alcohol Compliance Detail", a 17-year old male attempted to purchase alcohol at 15 St. Augustine Beaches establishments. The Aide was served alcohol at 3 of the businesses.

The aide would produce his actual identification if asked and state his true age if requested. The Sheriff's Office filed a charge of selling/serving or giving alcohol to a person under the age of 21on the three subjects who served alcohol to the Aide. Those reports will also be sent to the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco for potential administrative investigations.

The establishments where clerks were charged with selling alcohol to a minor were:

Kangaroo Express, 351 A1A/Beach Blvd., a 34-year old female sold a 4pk of beer.

Casa Maria Restaurant, 1001 A1A/Beach Blvd., a 26-year old female served a beer.

Pelican Pub, 2085 A1A South, a 39-year old female served a beer.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is hosting their first "Operation-Medicine Cabinet" this Saturday. This is a Pharmaceutical Take Back program, a prescription for safe kids and a clean environment.

When old medications are kept in your house it increases the chance for illegal use and theft. But the question remains on how to get rid of expired or old medication? You don't want to flush them, because that would send them into our water system which could contaminate our water supply as well as our drinking water.

Disposing of your unused or expired prescriptions and medications properly is extremely important. So bring your unwanted or unneeded medications to this free collection event and they will be disposed of free of charge. Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place this Saturday, 20 March, 2010 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the front parking lot of the Ponce de Leon Mall, 2121 U.S. 1 South.

Please bring the medications in their original container and that container will be returned. Items that will not be accepted are Sharps, Medical Wastes or thermometers.

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.
5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.
7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable . But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather...
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)
10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.
13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system.. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. 14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

18. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.
20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.
21. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door.. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you.. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection.. . Thought this was interesting and might be of use..

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High School . For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. On Saturday, 27 February, the Youth Services Unit of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office conducted another alcohol compliance detail as a continuing aspect of the "Party's Over" campaign. As part of the Sheriff's Office Investigative Aide Program, a 18-year old male attempted to purchase alcohol at 13 local establishments in the St. Augustine area. The Aide was served alcohol at 3 of the businesses. The operation is funded by a SARG Grant and falls under the PACT Prevention Coalition.

The aide would produce his actual identification if asked and state his true age if requested. The Sheriff's Office filed a charge of selling/serving or giving alcohol to a person under the age of 21 on the three subjects who served alcohol to the Aide. The reports will also be sent to the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco for potential administrative investigations.

The establishments where clerks were charged with selling alcohol to a minor were:

Kangaroo Express, 715 S.R. 207, charges signed on a 49-year old female clerk for selling the Investigative Aide a six pack of beer.

Appleby's, 225 S.R. 312, charges signed on a 25-year old female bartender who served the Aide a bottle of beer.

Gypsy Cab, 828 Anastasia Blvd., charges signed on a 23-year old male bartender who served the Aide a bottle of beer.

In all three of these cases the suspects checked the operatives ID, but still served to him.

Lost Camera

Yesterday (Saturday) a local couple went for a walk about 12:30 (noonish) and a nice looking young man on Costanero Road stopped them and asked if they had seen his Olympus camera (in a blue camera bag) along side the road. He said he thinks he put it on his car roof (to load other stuff into his car) and drove out of his driveway forgetting to get if off the roof. He had retraced his route but did not see it. He was not sure what day this happened but they think he said it was just a day or two ago.

They had not seen it on their walk and they suggested he ask all his neighbors. He said he was doing that. They also suggested he place an ad in the newsletter seeking help.They told him that they knew a couple who walked every day and that they would shoot them an email about his dilemma.

He said his sister gave him the camera for Christmas and she was coming for a visit next weekend (they think).

He lives on the east side of Costanero. He is close to the east end of Pizzaro Road. If anyone may have seen it or talked to anyone else might have please contact this website so we might put you in contact with him.

The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he'll need some information for "verification purposes"-your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number.

This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam.

Jury scams have been around for years, but have seen a resurgence in recent months. Communities in more than a dozen states have issued public warnings about cold calls from people claiming to be court officials seeking personal information. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone; they generally correspond with prospective jurors via mail.

The scam's bold simplicity may be what makes it so effective. Facing the unexpected threat of arrest, victims are caught off guard and may be quick to part with some information to defuse the situation.

"They get you scared first," says a special agent in the Minneapolis field office who has heard the complaints. "They get people saying, 'Oh my gosh! I'm not a criminal. What's going on?'" That's when the scammer dangles a solution-a fine, payable by credit card, that will clear up the problem.

With enough information, scammers can assume your identity and empty your bank accounts.

"It seems like a very simple scam," the agent adds. The trick is putting people on the defensive, then reeling them back in with the promise of a clean slate. "It's kind of ingenious. It's social engineering."

In recent months, communities in Florida, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, Oregon, California, Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Hampshire reported scams or posted warnings or press releases on their local websites. In August, the federal court system issued a warning on the scam and urged people to call their local District Court office if they receive suspicious calls. In September, the FBI issued a press release about jury scams and suggested victims also contact their local FBI field office.

In March, USA.gov, the federal government's information website, posted details about jury scams in their Frequently Asked Questions area. The site reported scores of queries on the subject from website visitors and callers seeking information.

The jury scam is a simple variation of the identity-theft ploys that have proliferated in recent years as personal information and good credit have become thieves' preferred prey, particularly on the Internet. Scammers might tap your information to make a purchase on your credit card, but could just as easily sell your information to the highest bidder on the Internet's black market.

Protecting yourself is the key: Never give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call.

A Column of the Day article entitled, "Pets must all wear collars when outside" appeared in the St. Augustine Record in November 2009. It was written by Deputy Joe Bowen of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. In case you did not see it in the St. Augustine Record, the information contained in this article is worthy of repeating for the benefit of all our neighbors in Treasure Beach.

Q. Could you do a column on laws pertaining to pets, especially leash laws, picking up after your animal and dangerous dogs?

A. According to St. Johns County Code/Sec. 4-10: Any person or legal entity who owns, is in charge of, is responsible for, or is in control of any dog or cat shall not allow or permit such dog or cat to enter upon any public or private property within the unincorporated area of St. Johns County (note: incorporated areas, such as the City of St. Augustine and the City of St. Augustine Beach, have their own codes and ordinances), unless such dog or cat is wearing a collar.

The collar must contain or have attached thereto the dog or cat owner's name and telephone number and an updated rabies inoculation tag.

Also, Ordinance Number 2001-19 of the St. Johns County Animal Leash Law requires all dogs and cats to be under the control of a person by leash, cord, chain or other restraint whenever the pet is within the unincorporated area of the county. (Yes, cats are now part of the leash law).

On the beach, pets are only permitted in designated day-use areas. All pets must be kept on a hand-held leash that is 6 feet or shorter and be well-behaved at all times.

Pet owners are required to pick up after their pets and properly dispose of the droppings. Currently there is no specific ordinance for unincorporated areas of St. Johns County about the "animal scooper law" other than on the beaches. However, most homeowner associations have some type of regulation about picking up after pets.

Under 767.10 Legislative Findings "Dangerous Dogs," the State of Florida declares dangerous dogs an increasingly serious and widespread threat to the safety and welfare of people and domestic animals because of unprovoked attacks. Such attacks are in part attributable to the failure of owners to confine and properly train and control their dogs.

"Dangerous Dogs" applies to any dog that, according to the records of appropriate authority:

Has aggressively bitten, attacked or endangered or has inflicted severe injury on a human being on public or private property.
Has more than once severely injured or killed a domestic animal while off the owner's property.
Has been used for the purpose of dog fighting or is a dog trained for dog fighting.
Has, when unprovoked, chased or approached a person upon the streets, sidewalks or any public grounds in a menacing fashion or in apparent attitude of attack, provided that such actions are attested to in a sworn statement by one or more people and dutifully investigated by the appropriate authority.

On the subject of pets, remember that Florida has a warm climate and pets will be strongly affected by hot weather. Never leave a pet in a parked car, even if the windows are open. Ten minutes could be too long on a hot day - by then, the temperature inside the car could reach 160 F, which is hot enough to cause a dog to suffer heat stroke. Pets don't perspire as people do. They cool themselves by panting. With only very hot air to breathe, a pet could suffer permanent brain damage. Pets might want to go for the ride, but sometimes it's much kinder to leave them at home with plenty of fresh, cool water in a climate-controlled residence.

Note: If your animal is overcome by heat exhaustion, immediately soak it down with water and take it to a veterinarian as quickly as possible.

It is hard to imagine that St. Johns County has 125 miles of waterways and many homes that are on the water. Emergency calls may require a response from a waterway which can create a real problem for the responding agency in locating the incident or a victim. These incidents can range from looking for an Alzheimer's patient who has wandered away, to toxic spills in the water, or a boating accident. If you live on the water you may not think about emergency responders that may arrive by boat.

Posted addresses on docks would allow marine officers to locate you more quickly should they be nearby in the water. Officials with the Emergency 911 system are contacting those who live on the St. Johns River and the Intracoastal Waterways leaving literature to show the importance of numbering their docks for emergency responders.

The minimum height of the numerical portion of your address is recommended to be 5 inches. The street name may be posted in 3 inch letters should you have limited space. The size and shape of the address posting will depend on your situation. The address may be displayed either horizontally or vertically, but keep in mind that they should be clearly visible and legible from the waterside, regardless of the direction of approach. You can use either 5 inch reflective numbers and letters from a store, or the same size letters in white on a blue sign from a sign shop. The choice is yours.

Posting your address on the waterside of your property is a simple, often overlooked solution that could save lives. The address can be posted on your dock, boathouse, or on a fence, wall, post or other structure that is visible and legible from the water.

Happy Halloween. Using these safety tips and common sense you can make the most

of your Halloween season.

BEFORE HALLOWEEN:

· Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that

costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

· Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater

visibility.

· Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within

Halloween attire or on a bracelet.

· When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, purchase only those with a label

indicating they are flame resistant.

· Think twice before using simulated knives, guns or swords. If such props must be used, be

certain they do not appear authentic and are soft and flexible to prevent injury.

· Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.

WHEN TRICK-OR-TREATING:

· A Parent or responsible Adult should always accompany young children on their

neighborhood rounds.

· Remind Trick-or-Treaters:

o By using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others.

o Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.

o Only trick-or-treat in well known neighborhoods at homes that have a porch light

on.

o Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk.

o If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic.

o Never cut across yards or use alleys.

o Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat.

o Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.

o Always walk. Never run across a street.

o Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local

custom).

o Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street, driveway

or alley.

o Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered.

Good morning all. As the year marchs on there are things around our community that are continually changing and there are other things that remain the same. There are several homes that have been finished up and become the homes of new residents. There are several more that are just beginning as Treasure Beach is becoming the "last" affordable canal front community that people are choosing to sink their families roots in. As we watch the changing face of our little community there are several other things we must also watch. As the economy has quite recovered and many people are faced with the lack of employment and the such "vandalism" and petty theft seems to occupy peoples time a little more than before. While we went out one morning to find that one of cars had been gone through and the items found missing were a gas card and several winning scratch off lottery tickets I was informed that our neighbor has also had gas stolen from several vehicles as well as their lawn tractor. So as well as making sure your vehicle is locked it might be a thought to purchase a locking gas cap as the price of gasoline is slowly creeping up making it a costly item to replace.

It is also that time of the year when the temperatures a slowly dropping giving your air conditioner a little deserved break from the summer. It is the time when you might think about getting your air contioner serviced and maintained while getting you heating unit "tuned up" also as the cooler temperatures will soon be upon us. It is also that time of the year when vacant homes might become the target of people looking for a place to "hang out" or what ever as the real estate market has taken a hit in our area as it has in so many others. We have had our share of forclosures as well as homes not selling due to the bubble bursting in that industry. If you should notice a vacant house in your area and notice unusual activety there at unusual hours with no residents in sight possible make the sheriff's department aware as to what you have seen. You are here all the time--They're Not!

An elderly St. Johns County couple, who were found deceased in their Treasure Beach home Sunday morning, died of apparent natural causes following an autopsy by the District Medical Examiner's Office.

Deputies responded to a residence in the 200 block of Puebla Rd., Sunday shortly before 11:00 a.m. after neighbors noticed a foul odor coming from the home. The two were found on the floor of the living room and foul play is not suspected. Preliminary autopsies revealed that both suffered heart attacks, pending toxicology results.

The two victims were identified as Donald Hankey, 80, and Patricia Hankey, 77.

Crescent Beach Shooting

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office along with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is continuing the investigation into the officer involved shooting that occurred last (Thursday) night. The subject, identified as Jackie Byron Beasley, 55, 274 Gracy St., was pronounced dead at Flagler Hospital.

Deputies responded to the 200 block of Gracy St. (off Middleton Ave.) in Crescent Beach at 8:45 p.m. Witnesses observed a male subject, walking on Middleton Ave., who was allegedly intoxicated, acting irrationally and was brandishing a handgun. The initial responding deputies arrived and confirmed that the subject was holding a handgun near his residence and that additional deputies were requested for backup. Additional deputies responded as well as two officers with the St. Augustine Beach Police Department.

The subject refused to drop the handgun and pointed it at the responding officers. Three law enforcement officers fired at the subject striking him multiple times. He was treated at the scene and was transported to Flagler Hospital by County Rescue Personnel where he later died.

The three officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sheriff's Deputies Steven Fischer and Shawn Emert and St. Augustine Beach Police Officer M. Todd Smith. They were placed on administrative leave by their agencies pending the investigation.

F.D.L.E. responded with investigators and Crime Scene Technicians and are continuing the investigation.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Robbery/Homicide Section are seeking a suspect in connection with an armed robbery of a S.R. A1A business (C.V.S. Pharmacy, 1920 A1A South) early last Tuesday morning.

The 27-year old female clerk stated that the suspect came into the store at 3:20 a.m. While holding a gun he demanded all of the money from the cash register. An undetermined amount of cash was given to the suspect who then fled the store in an unknown direction.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male in his early to mid 20’s, 5’3” tall, 120 pounds with black hair, brown eyes, long dark blue jean shorts, a plain black t-shirt and a black ball cap with white and black designs. He was also wearing a white and black bandana over his face.

Hello everyone. I spoke with a resident of Gomez Road today and want to make everyone aware as to what is happening in the neighborhood. This person had arrived home in the early morning hours and was sitting in THEIR car having a cigarette. All of the sudden the car door was opened by a person who was just as surprised to see them sitting there in their own car as that person was to be startled by them. As the owner of the car asked this person what they were doing opening their car door they noticed them removing white gloves and heard them apologize while stumbling on the words. With that the person ran off meeting a friend down the street and they both disappeared. This person did call the sheriff's department right away and a deputy responded immediately. They gave them a detailed description of the person and although the deputy did go look for them- no one was found. It is a very real wake up call to all residents to lock their vehicles at night. If you should someone that looks suspicious or just doesn't look right call the sheriff's department right away. This happened at approximately 1:30A.M. and the person just happened to be sitting in the car only because they had just gotten home. When most people are sleeping these kids are helping themselves to your belongings. Just to let you know what is happening in your neighborhood.

We want to share with you a major concern we have involving the health and welfare of our teenagers in St. Johns County. Our concern involves underage drinking and the proliferation of "house parties" many of which occur with knowledge on the part of some of our parents.
Every year we lose teenagers in traffic crashes and on occasion alcohol is involved. While the issue of underage drinking, open house parties and adults providing alcohol to our teenagers may go unnoticed on any given weekend, it cannot be ignored. The Sheriff’s Office has been addressing this problem for many years but we need your help.
In response to this issue we at the Sheriff’s Office and the School Board, along with The PACT (Prevent-Act-Change-Together) Coalition, will begin an educational awareness and enforcement campaign to reduce these numbers. The goal will be to gain willing compliance from establishments which sell or serve alcohol, as well as from all adults who host teen parties. Further, we will continue to check establishments to ensure they are not selling alcohol to minors.
Only when our entire community and youth work together can underage drinking be reduced in St. Johns County, making it a safe and healthy place for all residents, young and old.
If we can save the life of one of our teenagers we can consider our efforts worthwhile. Please join us in this countywide effort to help our young people. “The Party Is Over” because the loss of any child is one too many!

Boat Motor Burglary

On Wednesday night Dec, 23rd, 2008 sometime after midnight or Thursday morning our motor was stolen off our boat sitting on the boat lift in our “Pelican” canal, in the backyard, we live at 218 Puebla Road.

This motor is a White Johnston 9.9 Hp, short shaft.

We have the ID number and serial number of this motor and the sheriff office is looking for a description of a boat that might have been seem in our canals on that evening or morning or any information of who may have done this.

If you have any information at all, please notify me or the sheriff’s office immediately.

Hello everyone,

I am happy to announce that we had several reports from our volunteer watch people about traffic violations with speeding and pocket bikes and loud mufflers in addition to vehicles driving with no license and consequently no auto insurance in the past several weeks. I applaud their efforts to keep our community safe and I stand firm and support their reportings.

If any one witnesses a traffic violation or has a problem with excessively loud vehicles, please report it to the police department or let me know and I will try to get the problem addressed by our sheriffs office- that also goes for drivers running the stop signs and miniature motor bikes speeding through the neighborhood - Both are illegal.

You must be prepared to name the street and address, the approximate time and date(s) and what you perceive to be the violation and if this is a traffic violation + the license plate number. Anything else you can recall would help as well.

The same goes with properties that appear to be in violation of the county codes. If you don't know what the codes spell out just call me and I will talk with you about it. I would like to restate the county code for sitting out a refrigerator or freezer for trash collection. First, you must call the county offices and request pick-up. Next, and most important- YOU MUST REMOVE THE DOOR from the appliance to keep children from locking themselves inside and suffocating. YOU ARE LIABLE both criminally and open to Civil suits.

This neighborhood is a very nice place to live. There are changes happening here for the good of all of us. Our property values have risen to the delight of us all. Let's try to keep it safe for our families. Why not try and to keep our places neat and clean.

Very soon now I will be coming to you for a volunteer week of neighborhood watch. It will cover 4 months from April through July. Please consider helping out by taking a week. We have gone with only three weeks unprotected for the past 130 weeks. It is very important to keep our vigilance to deter crime of any sort in Treasure Beach. Please consider taking a week when I come to you.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to brief you on the happenings regarding our neighborhood watch here in Treasure Beach. I am happy to report that we have filled our vacancies for the time period from January 1 st thru April 29 th of 2006..Thatmsm the first 4 months of this year which means that we will only have to go through two more volunteer recruiting sessions before this year is over so there is still time to show your concern for Treasure Beach by volunteering a week of your time to patrol our streets. I will begin my request for help again probably some time the middle of April.

Recently our emergency cell phone for the neighborhood watch volunteers died. The phone was ready "to kick the bucket" - it had seen itms better times.. After making a telephone call to Sgt. Ricky Domingo in the Sheriffms office we received a new cell phone which is now back in the hands of our volunteer watch patrol. I can only thsnk Ricky for his help once again. This community owes much to Sgt. Ricky Domingoms efforts in the past as well.

I would like to welcome two of our newest volunteer members to the Neighborhood Watch- George Collins and Stephen & Phyllis Abbott who will be doing the watch for their first time. Of course, I would like to mention the names of our fine neighbors who have volunteered in the past few months - Lou Gai, Bill and Marion Libby, Peggy Berrier, Joe Fell, Doug Berndt, Ron and Michelle Harvey and Doug and Sheila Martin. Also, Bobbie Cleveland and Rick Kresge]who useto volunteer all the timebut have either sold or in the process of selling their home.I apologize to anyone whose name I may have not acknowledged. After all I am 65 years old now and my memory may not be as sharp as it once was.

There is an issue for which our committee will be addressing very soon and that is the fire-destroyed trailer located on Barco Road. Mr. Acosta of St. Johns County Code Enforcement will be contacted to have the owner of this trailer either promptly rebuild or promptly remove. This housing unit is a safety hazard and a vermin attraction. It is also an leyesoren in this community. I believe, if my mind serves me, that this trailer burnt down in the spring/summer of 2005. Time has past giving the owner time to get this straightened out but it appears that he/she has abandoned this unit and is willing to just let it stand there. If the owner reads this and would like to talk to me I would be happy to listen so I can find out his intentions. My phone is (471-1579).
